Geocaching with a Trimble Juno ST
Starting off with a Trimble Juno ST, one has a very compact gadget (just 133 grams, about 11cm x 6cm big) with the functionality of a very good GPS and a PDA combined. The integrated GPS receiver uses the SiRF3 chip set and provides position data even under difficult measuring conditions, like in the woods or with partially blocked horizon.
The
Juno ST uses the Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system for which many GPS,
Geocaching and Navigation applications are available. The included GPS data
collection software TerraSync is included (90 days of updates) and provides
all basic functions needed for the measurement of waypoints and navigation
in the field.
Optional Software
When used in cars or outdoors we recommend the usage of a navigation program like Destinator and/or a program for the display of topological data. Programs like GPSDash2 or oziexplorer can be used for this purpose: they allow importing graphical map data (topological maps not included with program package).
There are many applications with a variety of functionality for Geocachers. GPXSonar is for free and is the "official" Geocaching utility. In addition we would like to mention the commercial CacheMate ($8) that provides GPS integration.
